From Europe to the entire world with Thule’s merchandise

Thule is a Swedish company that sells sports accessories such as travelling bags, ski bags, car bicycle racks etc. Everything that makes it easy, safe and neat to bring what you need and care for when living an active life. The company was founded in 1942 in Hillerstorp in southern Sweden and today has 2200 employees. The products are sold in 140 markets.
Until 2015, Thule allowed a 3PL company to handle the transport management from their European warehouse. After having reviewed their European warehouse structure, the decision was taken to rethink distribution and transport management.
Thule built a large distribution centre in Huta, Poland, which stood ready in 2015 and at the same time changed 3PL and moved the external warehouse from Germany to Holland. From the two warehouses in Poland and Holland a major part of Thules products are sent today to 140 countries globally. Poland and Holland were chosen due to their proximity to the rest of Europe.
Automatic choice of carriers facilitates operations
Wojciech Tluscik is responsible for the polish warehouse. He thinks that it’s relatively new for the Polish market to use a carrier-neutral Delivery Management system like Unifaun’s. Previously, only one carrier were used via a 3PL company but with Unifaun, the possibility arose to be able to book transport with many other carriers.
Thule has integrated its WMS system with Unifaun’s system to facilitate day-to-day management. This entails all information going directly from the warehouse system to Unifaun’s system and so Thule is spared entering transport information manually more than once, which saves a lot of time.
In Unifaun’s system, Thule has chosen to set up certain “rules” as to which carriers should be used. This means that when the booking is made, the carrier is chosen automatically depending on weight, size, country, customer etc. Parcels up to 7 kg are, for e.g., always booked in with TNT. Most bookings are made this way, but sometimes there is routine intervention and an active choice of carrier is made.

Simplicity and willingness to cooperate are some of the things Thule appreciates most about Unifaun. The quick help when making changes and openness to discuss new possibilities. Among things currently under discussion between Thule and Unifaun are a module for better control of the Inbound flow, special labels for a certain customer segment and Unifaun’s integration with their business system. Thule is very happy with how transport management has worked out for them at present.
